Knowing the alphabet is very important if you are to place words in alphabetical order. Practice your skills and see if you can complete the alphabet. Click on the link below and let me know how you do.

The Alphabet

Miss Nelson is missing!!!!

This story is about a group of third grade students who don't appreciate their teacher very much. As a result, they get a surprise. It's not a very good surprise, but the students learn a valuable lesson.
As part of our activities for this story, you will write three sentences explaining why your regular teacher or English teacher are important to you or why you appreciate them. They don't have to be long sentences, but make sure they are complete sentences. We will be sharing them in class. There will be a bonus for all those who take the time and work on this.

Practice for my first graders...

We've been learning all about beginning sounds in our English class. Now its time for you to put into practice what we have been learning. Clifford has some challenges set up for you. Are you ready? On your marks, get set, GO! Visit this link and have a blast!

English is the beacon that guides to the shores of success.

Get ready to celebrate English Week Ana Pagan style! From March 23-27, 2009, Puerto Rico's English Program will celebrate English Week. Each year a slogan is chosen to represent the importance of English in our Department. This year, the slogan chosen was "English is the beacon that guides to the shores of success". As part of our activities, we will celebrate our traditional Spelling Bee in order to chose a student who will represent us in the district level competition. We will also carry out the Poster Contest in which our students show their talents in art and also get an opportunity to express what English means to them. The first graders will have a Picture Bee contest and Kindergarten will compete in the Commands Contest. All these activities have one goal in mind... get our students interested and motivated with their English class, and of course, have them learn. To conclude the week, a representation of our students will participate in the English Festival which will be celebrated at Escuela Nueva on March 26. If you see bathing suits and surfboards around school, don't be surprised...Our students will sing and dance to the song "Surfing in my imagination". I'm sure it will be a wonderful week for our students and for the teachers as well.

Third grade is making the difference!

On February 25, the third graders along with Horpolito presented the things they can do to help our world become a better one. The students shared with each other actions they can carry out that will make their world cleaner and healthier. It is very important that our students feel they can pitch in. That is why we emphasized that every little bit counts. Together we can make a difference.

Having fun with the gingerbread man!

For the past few weeks, my second grade groups have been reading and analyzing the story The Gingerbread Man. I decided to work with sequence of events by creating an accordeon book (idea I got on an assessment workshop), where the students would write the events and illustrate them. Not only did they enjoy it, they learned as well. Bob Barner, the illustrator of the story, created the drawings for this story using paper. My students also selected a scene from the story and recreated it using construction paper. They had an opportunity to feel as Bob Barner did when he created the illustrations for the story. Enjoy the show!

Getting ready for the PPAA

On February 12, 2009, the elementary level English teachers from the Hormigueros School District met to carry out a plan which we will all follow in order to help our students with the upcoming tests. The English Zone Supervisor, Angel A. Valentin along with the English teachers discussed in detail the English Program Standards and Expectations and how they will be worked with in these tests. It is meetings like these that help shape our understanding of how to implement the standards in our classrooms.

Mini-dictionaries

This past week, our third grade groups had the opportunity to create mini-dictionaries using the Scholastic webpage. Our students were able to create dictionaries which included the vocabulary words from the story "The Snow Glory" which they are about to begin reading. Not only did the students have a fun time doing this, but Mrs. Bermudez, our school's librarian was able to share in the learning experience with the children by guiding them throughout the class. If you wish to create your own, visit http://www2.scholastic.com/browse/lessonplan.jsp?id=1099
